Before we begin talking about the features of this tool, let’s understand
What can excess weight do to your body?
Knowing your body mass index or BMI, can be useful for assessing and adjusting your weight. It is not the most accurate measure of the amount of body fat you have, but it is the easiest and least expensive way to measure it.
BMI is a numerical value of a person’s weight in relation to their height. It is an attempt to quantify the tissue mass (muscle, fat, and bone) in an individual, and then categorize that person as underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese based on that value.
Values that fall between 18.5 and 25 kg/m² indicate a normal weight. A BMI of less than 18.5 kg/m² is considered underweight. Between 25 kg/m² and 29.9 kg/m² is considered overweight, while a BMI of 30 kg/m² or higher is taken to be obese.
However, for those under 20 years of age, highly trained/athletic, pregnant or breastfeeding, the BMI may not be the best method of assessing your risk from overweight or obesity.
In case of children, BMI is calculated the same way as adults, but used differently. The value is compared to typical values for other children of the same age. Instead of comparison against fixed thresholds for underweight and overweight, the BMI is compared against the percentile for children of the same sex and age.
So simply type your height and weight into the calculator to get a measure of your Body Mass Index in seconds!
