Written by Girish Khera on

About Breast Cancer:

  • 1 in 8 women in the United States develops breast cancer.
  • There are many types of breast cancer and they can start from different parts of the breast. Most of them are ductal type, i.e., they begin in the ducts that carry milk to the nipple. Some of them are lobular as they initiate in the glands that produce milk.
  • It can be diagnosed during a physical exam, by self-examination of the breasts, mammography, ultrasound testing, and biopsy.
  • Treatment depends on the type of cancer and its stage (0-IV) and may involve surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy.
  • The strongest risk factor for breast cancer is age. A woman’s risk of developing this disease increases as she gets older. However, the risk is not the same for all women in a given age group.
  • Women who have had breast cancer are more likely to develop it again.

Where are we?

A study published in Endocrine-Related Cancer found that levels of several breast cancer risk markers were reduced in postmenopausal women who lost total body fat, rather than just belly fat. These results emphasize the importance of maintaining a healthy weight and could influence the design of diet and exercise plans for overweight women.

“The experience has informed my life in every possible way. My life choices, in general, have been a direct result of having this illness. The thing I’ve learnt from breast cancer is the importance of early detection. Until we have a cure, it’s our best weapon and it gives us the best statistics for survival. I also always encourage women over the age of 40 to start the mammogram process. Knowledge provides power. It’s important to be proactive about your health.”
